Clinical and care professional leadership roles

Why do we need clinical and care professional leaders?

We have incredible people and organisations working to enable everyone to lead happy, healthy lives.

Carers, social care practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, doctors, voluntary and community sector professionals, experts by experience, allied health professionals, psychologists, healthcare scientists, physician associates, public health professionals  – all are making a difference.

But we face age-old challenges, from inequalities to preventable ill-health.

It’s clear no single person or organisation holds the answers. But COVID has shown that we can achieve so much when we work together – whether we plan, give or receive care and support. So we’re investing in the recruitment and development of people who can build on this momentum and work together across organisations and professions to improve health and care.

A clinical and care professional leader is someone who supports people to work together across organisations and professions to improve the health and wellbeing of people in their patch.

There is no ‘right’ sort of clinical and care professional leader. We want a health and care system that values and draws on the skills of different and unique people.

You’re likely to have some related experience. And you will be continuing to deliver care to people in South East London and registered with the appropriate professional body.

But whatever that may be – whether you’re a carer, social care practitioner, nurse, pharmacist, doctor, voluntary and community sector professional, expert by lived experience, allied health professional, psychologist, healthcare scientist, physician associate, public health professional or from another related background – you will care deeply about helping people lead happier, healthier lives.

  • You care about tackling inequalities and improving the health and wellbeing of all people in our patch.
  • You want to make a lasting difference to how people experience health and care services.
  • You believe in the power of bringing together people with different skills, backgrounds and perspectives.
  • You believe we all have something to give and something to gain by working together.

The capabilities below are in the words of 60 south east London system leaders, drawn from a set of five emerging characteristics which they have co-designed together.

  • Build connections and trust with different people and organisations who wouldn’t normally work together
  • Support different people and organisations to take collective action on shared challenges to improve the health and wellbeing of people in south east London.
  • Support people to share new ideas and test different approaches to working together on shared goals
  • Listen with compassion to actively involve people in the decisions that affect their lives and ensure their voices guide action
  • Embrace different perspectives and challenges in service of local people over organisations, places or professional groups

Sounds like a lot? Yes, but you’ll be supported through it.

You’ll join a growing community of system leaders who meet regularly to connect and learn and take part in more formal development activities as part of the new, South East London System Leadership Collaborative.
