PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis and is a pill you can take to protect you from HIV. If taken correctly it is extremely effective in preventing a person from getting HIV. Local authorities around England have received funding to commission PrEP for Q3 and Q4 of 20/21. Access to PrEP is now available at local clinics across south-east London (more details below) as well as other clinics around London and England. Access to the services is through telephone triage at both local and most London clinics.
What the PrEP offer looks like at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital
All service users access the service via a telephone triage line (020 7188 7707 for Streatham Hill and Walworth Road clinics and 020 7188 6666 for Burrell Street clinic) which is open 8.30-6pm (Mon-Fri) apart from Wed: 1pm-6pm Wed and from 9.30am-4pm on Sat and Sun.
All service users requesting repeat PrEP are booked into telephone PrEP clinics where a clinician will check their latest HIV test result and issue PrEP to be posted. There is the option to collect PrEP from Burrell Street (and soon at Streatham Hill).
Those requesting PrEP for the first time at GSTT are invited to a Health Adviser-led assessment in person or on the telephone and undergo baseline HIV/STI and renal monitoring tests and are then booked into telephone PrEP clinics where results are reviewed and PrEP is posted to them via Lloyds pharmacy.
What the PrEP offer looks like at King’s College Hospital (Camberwell) / Beckenham
PrEP can now be accessed at Camberwell Sexual Health Centre and at Beckenham Beacon. Anyone wishing to discuss starting PrEP or arranging PrEP follow up should book a telephone appointment via Camberwell Centre’s phone booking system or Beckenham’s system.
King’s College Hospital have a dedicated ‘face-to-face’ PrEP clinic on Tuesday afternoons (1-5pm) and telephone clinics on Wednesday afternoons for anyone who wants more advice or needs repeat prescriptions.
